Meet Dr. Brandee Goedecke
Acupuncturist. Medical history nerd. Gardener. Dog lover.
How I became an acupuncturist
I wasn't always a fan of needles. In fact, I was terrified of them.
My journey into acupuncture began in 2006, when I developed carpal tunnel syndrome while working in hospital administration. After trying medications, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, I was still struggling. My workers' compensation doctor recommended surgery, but I was worried about the potential complications and wanted to explore a less invasive option.
So I called my mom in tears. She suggested I try her acupuncturist.
Acupuncture? With needles? Seriously?
But at that point, I figured a few tiny needles were worth trying before committing to surgery.
I still remember walking into that first appointment. The office smelled of things I couldn't identify at the time—Chinese herbs, moxa, and Tiger Balm, as I later learned. It was unlike any medical office I'd visited, and despite my nerves, I was intrigued.
Then something completely unexpected happened.
I experienced what acupuncturists sometimes affectionately call the acu buzz. It's difficult to describe if you've never felt it, but for me it was a wonderful, whole-body sense of relaxation, almost like being pleasantly tipsy while still completely aware. I felt so good that I didn't particularly want anyone interrupting me—not even to schedule my next appointment.
Afterward, I sat in my car for about ten minutes, enjoying the feeling and letting it settle.
And right there in that car, I knew I wanted to become an acupuncturist.
I wanted other people to have the opportunity to experience that same sense of relaxation, relief, and possibility.
I returned for two more treatments that week, and my wrist symptoms improved considerably. Over the following six weeks, while training for a triathlon, my symptoms resolved. That was my personal experience, not a promise of what acupuncture can do for everyone, but it changed the direction of my life.
I applied to acupuncture school the following week.
My approach to acupuncture
I've been practicing acupuncture since 2012, and one of the things I love most about my work is getting to know the people who come through my door.
I believe good healthcare starts with listening. Your symptoms matter, but so do your experiences, your lifestyle, and what you hope to accomplish.
My approach combines individualized treatment plans with education, honest conversations, and active participation in your care. I want you to understand what we're doing and why, feel comfortable asking questions, and have a voice in the decisions we make together.
My clinical interests include women's health, particularly perimenopause and menopause, as well as chronic pain, stress and anxiety, sleep difficulties, digestive concerns, and dermatological conditions. I also work with people navigating more complex health challenges, including those seeking supportive care during cancer treatment.
I'm particularly passionate about women's health and the importance of taking women's symptoms seriously. I've long been fascinated by medical history, including the ways women's experiences have sometimes been overlooked or misunderstood.
And I've never forgotten what it felt like to be the nervous patient on the treatment table.
If you're apprehensive about needles, believe me, I understand! Everyone experiences acupuncture differently. Some people notice sensations during treatment, others feel very little, and many become so relaxed they drift off for an acu nap.
We'll talk about what to expect, and I'll always encourage you to tell me how you're feeling. There's no prize for being the toughest person on the treatment table.
A little about me outside the clinic
My love of plants started when I was little, tagging along with my grandfather, a florist in Bozeman, Montana. I've been fascinated by plants and the natural world ever since.
These days, I grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers, including a rather rebellious little patch of asters, goldenrod, and sweetgrass inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass. The bees love it. My neighbors seem less impressed.
I love cooking, a good cup of coffee, historical fiction, and books that make me laugh out loud. I'm endlessly curious about medicine, history, science, and why people do the things they do.
And I love dogs. All dogs, really, but German Shepherds have a particularly special place in my heart.
At Unity Acupuncture, I've worked to create the kind of healthcare experience I would want for myself: thoughtful, welcoming, and grounded in genuine connection.
You deserve to be listened to, to ask questions, and to feel comfortable being yourself.
I look forward to meeting you.
